Blog Post: 10 Benefits of a Recession

Tim Vang | 14.11.2008 12:42:02 CET |
I am in close dialogue with an amazing clothing company; Howies (I met them at Wavelength and I truly fancy the road they travel) - browsing their site I stumbled upon the following list of benefits of a recession... I really like it, so I simply just want to share it with you as well as wish you a great weekend...
  • It causes you to get more creative.
  • It forces you to make the tough decisions.
  • It thins out the competition.
  • It makes you realize you can’t take anything for granted.
  • It reminds you that real wealth isn’t about the stuff you own.
  • It fosters out-of-the-box thinking.
  • It makes it easier to abandon business-as-usual.
  • It brings you back to the basics.
  • It accelerates change.
  • It causes you to be less wasteful.

Hi Tim!

First: I love the idea of ending poverty and the way it's done here at Myc4.
But some annoying bugs, and misunderstandings (My oppinion) are making people a little irritable. Please look here:

And feel free to join in :)

I have posted the same by Mads

Best regards
Michael

What's unfair about speculation?
But you are right: This shows that the theory that you cannot manipulate a market over the long term because your speculative position has to become so big that you will eventually go broke and leave the market.
That's a real benefit of the recession: People realize, again, that after all speculation alone does not create value and thus is not sustainable.
Now the next level of awareness has to come, which is, that efficient markets actually NEED speculation because that's what dampens out imbalances of real business transactions. The very volatile markets we see now are to a certain degree due to the fact that a lot of speculation money has left the market and now if I need to buy something today and few people want to sell right now I pay a high price and then if you want to sell the same thing tomorrow, there's no buyer around and you have to sell it cheap and both of us loose out. We would love to have a speculator in between who would have held a speculative position yesterday and would have realized that he can get a premium by selling to me and buying back another day at a better price, add some competition and both of us get better prices.

What does this mean for MyC4? What it has always meant: It's good to have a market place that is agnostic to motivations and thus can attract capital from parties that just want to make some money on a good opportunity and everyone will profit!
Don't complain on motivations here, as long as someone brings money, it's fine!

#12
All the stupid and unfair speculators lose a lot and hopefully everything will be more transparent

To sum it up:
#11: You can buy more for your money if you still have some left... :-)

If you are capex it gives you great opportunity to take a lead in your market. If you are able to invest and accelerate your business in a downturn market you will have a great position when the market turns around.

Creative destruction!

Another benefit from the financial crisis is that it slows down the consumption of resources in the world, leaving us more time to solve the resource crisis and the climate problem.
